FAQs

Oils are for (most) everyone! They are simple yet powerful and if you are completely Team No Oil, perhaps you have experienced them all wrong. Here are some of our most commonly asked questions about The AfterGlow and face oils in general. If your question isn't answered here, feel free to drop me a note at hello(at)chaeskincare (dot)com with your specific questions!

Q: The thought of putting oil on my face scares me. Aren’t oils only for dry skin?

A: The beauty industry has been scaring us the past few decades about needing “oil-free” products. Beauty oils are making a major comeback and if you haven’t given them a chance yet, let me tell you why now is the time! Oils in the form of lipids and essential fatty acids are naturally occurring in or skin. They are what give us that healthy natural glow and keep us looking youthful. Lipids are what protect us from environmental damage like UV rays and pollution and signs of aging like fine line and wrinkles. As we age, we produce less lipids so incorporating a high quality face oil into your regimen will slow signs of aging. There are oils for ALL skin types, even oily! Oils that balance the skin and normalize sebum production are perfect for oilier skin types. The AfterGlow contains bergamot and neroli which are both skin balancers.

Q: What are the differences between face oils, creams and lotions?

A: We have all used creams or lotions on our face and probably feel pretty comfortable with them. So how do plant-based oils compare? Face creams are mostly water and wax (wax holding the moisture in). Wax can potentially clog pores and cause issues. It can also prevent the oils in the cream from penetrating. Natural oils give you all of the benefits of a cream with none of the drawbacks. Also, the small lipid particles in oils penetrate beyond the epidermal barrier and deliver nutrients to deeper layers of your skin. This means that you are getting highly-active ingredients at the dermal layer where cell renewal happens.

Q: How do I choose the right oil?

A: Only some oils deliver important micronutrients. The best oil blends deliver a combination of vitamins, antioxidants and essential fatty acids–oils that contain the right balance is like a topical multivitamin for your skin. Read the label to make sure you are getting a range of antioxidant and EFA-rich oils. You should also choose oils that are cold-pressed as heat oils all the nutrients and beneficial properties. All the ingredients in The AfterGlow are organic or wild-crafted and cold-pressed. Our formula contains vitamins A,B, C,D, and E, essential fatty acids like linoleic, oleic, palmitic and stararic acid, omegas 3, 6 and 9, antioxidants and phytonutrients to fully nourish your skin.

Q: At what point in my routine do I apply face oil?

A: It’s easy to get confused about all the possible steps in a skin care routine. Even more, the popularity of Korean beauty with its 10 steps doesn’t make it any easier.

There are conflicting opinions about which comes first- Serum or oil? Cream or oil? I’ve seen blog posts all over saying to apply your moisturizing creams after your oil. If this is what you’re doing, stop.

There is only ONE correct time to apply a face oil and that is LAST. Face/beauty oils are not moisturizers in and of themselves. Moisture must be present in the skin. If you apply an oil, it provides a moisture barrier/sealant and anything applied after, will not penetrate. Load up on hydrating goodness (hydrosol face mists, essences, serums AND water based moisturizers) and then lock it in with a nourishing, emollient oil (preferably The AfterGlow😉).

Q: Why are face oils more expensive than creams?

A: Not all oils are created equal and when it comes to face oils, quality is extremely important. A quality oil starts with where and how it was harvested, the process of extraction and then how it is stored. The texture, smell, color and consistency all tell a story about its quality. Unlike creams and other mainstream face moisturizers, oils are 100% pure without the added fillers, waxes, preservatives that fluff up a cream. In an oil, you are getting all the benefits and more of a cream in a much more concentrated unadulterated form. Extracting the oils from the nuts and plants can be laborious and time consuming. Additionally, many of the plants are indigenous to specific areas, making them rare and coveted. In turn, because they are so concentrated, you only need a few drops to receive the same–and oftentimes more–benefits.

Q: How is The AfterGlow Revitalizing Botanical Serum-in-oil created?

A: CHAE uses only cold-pressed, organic or wild-crafted oils sourced from sustainable, women's co-ops outside Marrakesh, Morocco. That said, we do not use a steam distillation process. All of our botanical oils are created through a time-honored process called enfleurage. Enfleurage is a method by which a foundational oil is infused with nutrients from the other whole plants and was used in perfumery. Similar to the processes of creating wine and spirits–instead of imparting flavors and textures, the process extracts aromatics and active nutrients like vitamins and minerals from the 7 different active botanicals used in The AfterGlow. The process typically requires 2-4 months and close monitoring because every plant reacts to temperature and processing times differently. Additionally, enfleurage is one of the most expensive extraction methods but when you compare The AfterGlow with lower quality face oils, the differences are markedly noticeable.

Q: If my skin is oily/acne-prone, won’t this just add more oil and add to my acne?

A: There are a lot of things that contribute to acne–skin congestion from dairy, touching your face, not cleaning your phone screen, not taking makeup off, stress, hormones...the list goes on. Oils like grape seed, barbary fig seed and sunflower oils are non-comedogenic (non-clogging), highly absorbable and sebum balancing. Additionally, The Afterglow contains many soothing and healing botanicals. For example, Moroccan rose has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties which reduce and heal acne-prone and sensitive skin. Neroli is also an acne-fighter and skin balancer while lavender is deeply healing + antibacterial which means it generates pores and kills acne-causing bacteria.

Q: When I apply my oil it seems to just sit on top of my skin. What am I doing wrong?

A: First, make sure you are choosing 100% natural, cole-pressed, plant-based oil or blend. Second, I cannot stress the importance of exfoliating dry skin regularly (1-2x/week) enough. This removes the dead layer of skin cells currently sitting on the surface of your skin providing a barrier and making it difficult for the oils (this goes for other liquids as well) to penetrate. When you exfoliate and that layer of dead skin is removed, a fresh new layer is exposed and the fresh skin is prepped to receive maximum benefits from antioxidants, fatty and amino acids, phytonutrients and vitamins. Additionally, always apply oils to damp skin. Oils are NOT hydrating. Oils provide a nutrient-rich barrier to lock moisture in.

Q: How long will a bottle of The AfterGlow last? What is the shelf-life?

A: The AfterGlow is approximately 375 drops. We suggest using about 3-4 drops. So depending if you use it once or twice per day, The AfterGlow will last you approximately 2-4 months. The recommended shelf-life of The AfterGlow is one year. Be sure to use the dropper and not to contaminate the oil inside the bottle to ensure the quality and lifespan.
